The Hartnell Speech Team began its 2017/2018 competition season September 23 and 24, 2017 at the Golden Gate Opener sponsored by San Francisco State University and the City College of San Francisco. The weekend featured two separate tournaments held on the respective days.  Twenty (20) teams from California and Nevada competed, representing two-year and four-year institutions. Schools included Concordia University, University of California (Berkeley), University of Nevada (Reno), Modesto Junior College, and others.

Repeating their team success from last year, the Hartnell squad earned an overall team trophy at the tournament, earning 3rd place Overall Community College.

Leading the team was Captain Casie Guido. She earned 2nd place in Communication Analysis on Day 1, and 1st place on Day 2.

“I am very excited for Casie,” said Coach Jason Hough. “With this strong start at the first tournaments, she will have an excellent chance of qualifying for the national tournament.”

This is a building year for the Hartnell Team, as the rest of the members are new competitors. However, these new students earned multiple awards, including:

·         Hannah Villafuerte, Top Novice, Communication Analysis (Day 1)

·         Ilian Ramos, Top Novice, Communication Analysis, (Day 2)

·         Isaac Rodriguez, 3rd place, Informative Speaking (Day 2)

·         Victor Nambo, 4th place, Informative Speaking (Day 2)

·         Athena Rodriguez, 4th place, Novice Persuasive Speaking (Day 2)

and 5th place, Novice Persuasive Speaking (Day 1)

·         Carmen Urciuoli, 5th place, After Dinner Speaking (Day 1 and Day 2)

“We are really pleased to come away with a team trophy this early in the year,” said team Co-Coach Daniel Lopez. “The award is a combined effort, so to earn it really speaks to the quality of the students and strength of the team.”

Competing for the team but not advancing to elimination rounds were teammates Adriana Gonzalez, Luke Lundin, and Sandra Ruvalcaba.

Guido, Isaac, and Nambo scored high enough in their final rounds to earn partial qualification for the national tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida, April 2017.

The team’s next competition will be held at Santa Rosa Junior College on October 7th.
