Shared Governance

The role of the Classified Senate in shared governance at Hartnell College is arguably the most important purpose of the Senate. The classified voice is essential and unique, and brings valuable input that contributes to the success of the College.

“The HCCS shall promote the classified staff as 'equal partners' in designing the future of the District and involve the classified staff in the on-going activities, planning, and decision-making of the college…[and will] provide classified staff the opportunity to participate effectively in college governance…” (HCCS Constitution, Preamble)

“We, the Classified Staff of the California Community Colleges, do hereby establish the California Community Colleges Classified Senate in order to promote the best interests of higher education in the State, and facilitate effective participation of classified colleagues at the state level.” (California Community Colleges Classified Senate Bylaws)
The HCCS President is responsible for appointing classified employees to college wide committees (Constitution, Article VI), both shared governance and ad hoc. It is the responsibility of the appointed member to attend committee meetings, represent his/her constituents, and to report Committee activities to and receive guidance from the Classified Senate.
