DISCUSSION:  There was discussion regarding the last sentence in the course descriptions, “Not open to students who have completed CIS ##”.  Per the Chair this statement is inconsistent throughout the Catalogue.  Other versions are, successfully completed, and completed with a grade of C or better.  The Chair asked that the minutes be researched to see what statement was last approved by the Curriculum Committee.

When specific format recommendations are approved by the Committee, outlines are updated as they come in for other revisions.  Many outlines have not been revised for years; therefore, they still reflect old formats.

      DISTANCE EDUCATION DISCUSSION

There was discussion surrounding the inconsistency regarding DE courses. This was prompted by two CSS courses that were approved for DE modality; the discussion centered around the funding received for DE classes, whether or not there was approval from management to offer DE classes (even though areas are offering DE courses), the lack of a College-wide DE philosophy, how DE courses are funded, and the role of the Curriculum Committee in DE courses. Charlene reminded the Committee that we are not supposed to be offering Distance Ed courses until these questions are resolved. Allan said that we have a Distance Ed Committee looking at these issues. The Distance Ed Committee has not been meeting pending the arrival of the new Director of the Learning Resource Center and Distance Education. It was agreed that the role of the Curriculum Committee was to approve courses offered in the DE modality.

INFORMATION/DISCUSSION

1.   Student Learning Outcomes - Melissa Reeve

Nothing to report, they have not met.

2.   CurricUNET – Chair

The Q and A regarding CurricUNET (answered by Tamas, the CEO of Governet, who publishes CurricUNET) were discussed. The Committee asked what the next step was. Allan would like the Curriculum Committee’s approval to go forward. The Committee appears to agree that using software to electronically maintain, create, and revise our curriculum will expedite the process; however, there is concern about the initial funding for the software as well as annual system maintenance: ($70,000, one-time cost; $19,900, annual cost (host and maintenance); it was proposed that Measure H fund CurricUNET. The Committee agreed that CurricUNET should be a formal discussion item on the Senate agenda and brought to each area for further discussion.

3.   Curriculum & Tech Committee Meetings

A column for Tech Review dates was added to the Curriculum Committee Agenda & Timelines.

4.   Curriculum Simplified

In order to expedite the curriculum process the Chair created an abbreviated step by step process of the current curriculum procedures.

The Curriculum & Tech review meeting dates and the Curriculum Simplified information will be copied back to back and distributed to all faculty.

DISCUSSION

Mary would like clarification between “Emphasis” and “Option” in our degrees.  Is there a difference?  Should the emphasis or option be listed on the student’s degree or certificate?  It was recommended that we look at what other schools in our area are doing.
