The Hartnell College Chamber Singers is an audition only group comprised of 14-16 students who are concurrently enrolled in the Hartnell College Choir. The group meets three times a week for one hour and usually has upwards of 8-10 performances per semester, many of them off campus. Singing experience is necessary and most students in this group possess basic sightreading skills. Repertoire varies from traditional, small group choral music such as madrigals to more contemporary music. Members of this group are also asked to learn choreography for certain songs as in the style of a swing choir.

Hartnell Community Chorus

HARTNELL COLLEGE COMMUNITY CHORUS -- (Click on image for a larger view)

Any adult of any age is urged to join the Hartnell Community choir, which meets on Monday evenings, 7-9:45 PM. Directed by one of the area's most effective choral enthusiasts, Linda Keill, the group combines exposure to an endless variety of choral music with performance experience, cameraderie, and just a whole lot of fun learning the fundamentals of vocal music.

The group generally gives up to two concerts a season. You can pick up one music credit per semester by enrolling in this class, which is a place to come and learn from the ground up, or to bring whatever range of experience you have to contribute.

The class includes a large number of returnees each season. A hand-picked "chorus within a chorus" gives more experienced singers a chance to work on and perform a few more difficult a capella selections each semester.

The Hartnell Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble are classes which are open to all day students and offer units of transferable university credit. The Wind Ensemble studies and performs music for small wind/percussion ensemble and often features soloists from within the group. The Jazz Ensemble plays all types of American swing, jazz, pop and rock. Students register for one group or the other but most perform with both ensembles often switching instruments. The ensembles rehearse Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m.

They perform regularly at college and community events. The group has performed at the Salinas Area Chamber of Commerce "Taste of the Valley" at Sherwood Hall and for the dinner dance in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Hartnell College. Other performances have included concerts for the Salinas and King City Rotary clubs, Alisal High School, Salinas High School, Gonzales High School, Northridge Mall, the Salinas Valley Fair in King City, and the Hartnell College Foundation.

The group performs as a pep band at Hartnell home football games and has appeared in Cherry's Jubilee at Laguna Seca. In October, 1992 eighteen members of the Hartnell Jazz Ensemble traveled to JAPAN. The band was selected by the Hartnell Foundation to represent Hartnell at the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Miyagi College, our sister college, in Sendai, Japan.

During 1996-97 the band performed for two Hartnell Music Department "Extravaganza Events", two Office of Community Education Tea Dances, the ground-breaking ceremony for the Steinbeck Center, the Hartnell Faculty and Staff Awards Night, Frank Paul School, Loma Vista School, and Spreckels School. During the 1997-98 year the band performed for a Hartnell Music Department "Extravaganza", the Monterey County Ethnic Cultural Council Day at Hartnell, Frank Paul School, and San Benancio School. In June of 1998 the Band performed for the pre-opening gala of the Steinbeck Center.

On January 3, 1999 the Band performed as part of the inaugural festivities of California Governor Gray Davis.
