Principles of Chemistry (Chem 60)

Chem 60 is a course designed for students in nursing and allied health programs.  Chemistry is a quantitative/predictive science.  It is not an isolated collection of facts but a body of knowledge that fits together in laws and theories to describe nature.  We will discuss these laws and theories that will allow us to predict and describe chemical phenomena.  In Chem 60, we will discuss the structure of elements and compounds, chemical reactions, radioactivity, states of matter, the structure and properties of organic compounds and biomolecules, and their role in metabolic processes.

This course consists of lecture and lab.  Hands-on work and group work will be used to help you learn and understand chemistry.  Your learning depends on you; you are responsible for your learning.  This course is fast-paced and covers a lot of material.  To maximize your learning of this material, study the assigned chapters and try working  questions/problems at the end of each chapter prior to each class.  This practice allows you to focus on important points in class discussions and ask questions over material you don't understand.  After each class, review your notes and the assigned chapter and try working more questions/problems.  When questions arise, please ask!

Welcome to Chem 60! Here is where you will find updates and messages of general interest. Please let me know if there is anything you would like to see posted here... if you send me links to interesting sites I will gladly add them on the left. This site is constantly evolving so check back often. Messages of the week... don't fall behind, lose any fear of chemistry, work hard and keep an open mind!

Homework for wednesday- Print out syllabus and answer survey. Also, print out and sign the laboratory safety sheet at the end of the safety discussion section of the lab manual introduction posted on the left. This is a for credit assignment and rules regarding late work will apply!
