[Philosophy] [Messages] [Courses & Syllabi]
We know that those people who present themselves well will make more money. We know that learning to speak well in public increases a person's confidence. We know that speech helps people critically evaluate their thoughts and the thoughts of those they listen to. We know that for many people, speech is one of the most frightening experiences in our society. We know that most people have received little or no training about speaking by the time they reach Hartnell. This skill is imperative in our society and I will help you acquire it during the next 18 weeks.
Speech classes are perceived as frightening experiences and students generally delay taking these classes to their last semester. It is my job to develop an atmosphere in the classroom of mutual trust and caring. In my classes the students will know each other's names and will act as a support group to each other. Over and over students report that the interaction with and the support of their peers allowed them to excel in their speech classes.
Wordsworth's "The Prelude" states: "What we have loved, others will love, and we will teach them how."
I love the subjects that I teach and I work at loving my students. Genuine
caring for the student, the student's learning, and the subject defines my
instructional style. My job is to guide the student through information and
skills and extend their ability to compete in our culture.
