Library Courses

The Library Instruction curriculum is designed to assist students develop the information competency skills they will need to succeed in their Hartnell courses and beyond.

The courses teach about traditional print sources including reference books and periodicals, electronic sources such as online databases and Internet resources, and multimedia sources. The library faculty are committed to teaching information research skills so that students will make the most of their college experience.

Library Research Skills Assignments

For CSS 43 students:

Library Research Skills
Focuses on topics relating privacy and computers. Students gain practice using the online catalog, EBSCOhost databases, Proquest Newspapers, CQ Researcher and formatting bibliographic citations using APA style.

For English 1A students:

Library Research Skills: Using Electronic Resources
Guides students through searching the online catalog by author, subject and keyword. Students get practice using both Basic Search and Combination Search modes. Four electronic databases are also searched in this exercise, and students format one bibliographic citation.

 

For English 101 students:

Basic Library Research Skills, Part 1
Focuses on searching the online catalog and EBSCOhost databases.

Basic Library Research Skills, Part 2
Offers practice searching ProQuest Newspapers database, CQ Researcher, and evaluation of web sites.

For Online English 1A students:

Library Research Skills for Online English Students: Online Catalog
Provides a mini-lecture about the online catalog, and offers a library skills exercise with multiple choice answers.

Library Research Skills for Online English Students: Electronic Resources to Find Information in Periodicals
Introduces students to periodicals and periodical databases, and provides a library skills exercise using three databases with multiple choice answers.
