Medical Coding Program Course Descriptions
Introduction to Medical Terminology (48 lecture hours)
The study of medical vocabulary with emphasis on principles of word construction, pronunciation, and word recognition associated with anatomical, diagnostic, symptomatic, and operative terms relating to individual body systems. The use of medical dictionaries and other references is stressed. A basic introduction to anatomy and physiology is also included.
Introduction to Medical Billing (48 lecture hours)
The study of managed health care with an emphasis on medical billing and the accurate completion of claims forms for major nationwide medical insurance programs. The importance of the integration of the health system, including federal, state and private medical insurance programs.
ICD-9 Coding (48 lecture hours)
General overview of nomenclature and classification of body systems and diseases. This course presents the basic principles of ICD-9CM coding, and the use of the ICD-9CM manual. Emphasis is placed on inpatient coding.
CPT Coding (48 lecture hours)
An introduction to the CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) manual and in-depth study of the sections contained in the medical code set. Emphasis on body systems in relationship to the CPT codes, along with anatomy, terminology, and procedures; focus on the correct way to code medical procedures.
Medical Office Software Applications (90 lecture/workshop hours)
Course designed to teach the essential knowledge and hands-on practice using medical accounting management software and computers in a simulated laboratory for scheduling, billing, and maintaining patient records. The course provides students with the skills to apply the knowledge from all other courses in real-life medical office simulations.
Review Class and Preparation for CCA Examination (15 lecture/workshop hours)
Students will review past courses in preparation for the Certified Coding Associate examination.
