MLT Program Background

The program was developed in order to address the needs of students, the community, and the laboratory-related industry by providing a resource for developing competent, skilled, and knowledgeable medical laboratory technicians. The first year of studies typically prepares students in the areas of General Biology, Chemistry and Microbiology while also completing the necessary general education requirements for the Associate of Science Degree.

The second year courses provide specific theoretical and laboratory experiences in Clinical Chemistry, Immunology/Immunohematology, Microbiology and Hematology. In addition, during the second year, students participate in 23 weeks of clinical rotation in local hospital laboratories, applying theoretical knowledge, learning test procedures, and gaining practical exposure to laboratory operations. Upon successful completion of all academic and clinical requirements of the program, students may petition for graduation with an Associate of Science Degree from Hartnell College.
