Provides the student with knowledge required of the health care professional to perform basic life support in any setting.  Upon successful completion, students acquire American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification. A processing fee will be required for the CPR card.



Medical Terminology, HES-80

Introduces the foundations of medical word-building principles as essential tools for effective communication in the health services industry. This course is not open to students who have completed BUS-180 with a grade of "C" or better.



Introduction to Public Health, HES-1

An introduction to the discipline of public health. An overview of terminologies and basic concepts of public health, public health professions, institutions, and public health disciplines will be provided. Areas of public health such as epidemiology, prevention and control of diseases in the community, analysis of social determinants of health, health disparities, community health promotion programming, environmental health and safety, global health, and healthcare policy will be covered.



Health and Social Justice, HES-2

An introduction to the health inequities in the United States due to unequal living conditions. Socioeconomics, race and gender as topics of health inequality in the United States will be covered. Students will research current policy proposals to reduce health inequality and gain information and skills for health and social justice advocacy.



Drugs, Health and Society, HES-3

An overview on substance abuse and its relevance to personal and public health. The definition of licit and illicit drug use as well as the concept of substance abuse and dependence will be introduced. The pharmacology of selected substances and their neurologic and physiologic effects will be reviewed. Political, social, and economic factors involved in the supply and demand for drugs will be discussed. Epidemiologic data on the incidence, prevalence, and trends of smoking, alcohol, prescription, and other drug dependencies in the U.S. will be covered as well as risk factors associated with the use and abuse of these substances. Treatment options for recovery and prevention will be reviewed.
