The Hartnell Speech Team wrapped up its regular season at the California Community College State Championships in Sacramento, March 8-11, 2018.

The team has qualified three students for the Phi Rho Pi National Community College National Speech tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida, April 9-15.

Team captain Casie Guido has qualified in three events, including After Dinner Speaking, Communication Analysis, and Prose Interpretation. Guido earned a bronze in the Prose event at the state championships.

Teammates Chris Rendon and Hannah Villafuerte have also qualified in two events. Rendon will represent Hartnell in Dramatic Interpretation and Poetry Interpretation, and Villafuerte will join Guido in the Communication Analysis and Prose Interpretation events.

Competing for the team this season but not qualifying for the national tournament were teammates Adriana Gonzales, Athena Ramirez, Carmen Urciuoli, Chris Almaraz, Iliana Ramos, Isaac Rodriguez, Luke Lundin, Sandra Ruvalcaba, and Victor Nambo.

“We have taken some great lessons from the competitive season,” said Co-Coach Daniel Lopez. “Next year’s team will be focused on generating more champions to represent Hartnell nationally.”

Also at the state tournament, Co-Coach Jason Hough was elected by peers as the next President of the California Community College Forensics Association, and will help lead the organization the next two years.

The team will be hosting a public showcase fundraiser on the main campus at Steinbeck Hall, March 21. All twelve members of this year’s team will present a variety of speech events. Admission is only $5, and will help send the qualifying team members to the national tournament. Mature themes are presented, so parental guidance is advised. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
