UPDATE AS OF JUNE 14, 2024
The Monterey County Registrar of Voters certified the election results and the District was notified that Cesar O. Iracheta was elected to Trustee Area 6 for the remainder of the term, which expires in December 2026.  Trustee Iracheta will be sworn in at the regular meeting of the Governing Board on July 9, 2024.

The Board adopted Resolution 24:4, Ordering An Election to Fill a Vacancy on the Hartnell CCD. 

UPDATE AS OF JANUARY 19, 2024
The District was notified by the County Superintendent of Schools that a "Petition for Special Election to Fill the Vacancy on the Governing Board of the Hartnell Community College District, Trustee Area 6 of Monterey County," was submitted to her office on Thursday, December 21, 2023. As Monterey County Superintendent of Schools, she reviewed the Petition and requested that the Monterey County Registrar of Voters verify the sufficiency of signatures as required by law, pursuant to Education Code section 5091.

The County Registrar of Voters notified her on Friday, January 19, 2024 that the Petition contains a sufficient number of valid signatures. As a result, it has been determined that the Petition is legally sufficient and that the Hartnell Community College District Trustee Area Six Provisional Appointee, Sonia Jaramillo, is to be terminated from her seat effective immediately, and that a special election is to be held to fill the vacancy.

UPDATE AS OF NOVEMBER 21, 2023
PUBLIC NOTICE OF VACANCY AND PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT OF GOVERNING BOARD MEMBER-
Per Education Code 5092, notice is hereby given that a vacancy was created in District 6 of the Hartnell Community College District Governing Board by reason of the resignation of Trustee Erica Padilla-Chavez, who filed a letter with the Monterey County Board of Education on November 1, 2023 stating that she would resign her board position effective November 2, 2023.

In accordance with Education Code sec. 5091, the Board made a provisional appointment on November 21, 2023, naming Sonia Jaramillo to the vacancy.

Unless a petition calling for a special election, containing a sufficient number of signatures, is filed in the Office of the Monterey County Superintendent of Schools within 30 days of the date of the provisional appointment, it shall become an effective appointment. Any such petitions must conform to the requirements listed in sec. 5091(f).

Update 11/15/2023 - The application period has closed.  Three applications were received.  If accepted by the candidates, all three  interviews will be held at a public meeting on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, 6 p.m., Hartnell College Main Campus Student Center Steinbeck Hall, 411 Central Avenue, Salinas.

TRUSTEE AREA 6 BOARD VACANCY

Hartnell Community College District Governing Board 
invites applications to serve Trustee Area 6

The Hartnell Board is soliciting applications to serve as an appointed member of the Board of Trustees until the next regularly scheduled election for governing board members, which is in November 2024.

The appointment is due to the resignation of Erica Padilla-Chavez who moved from her area which created a vacancy.  A map of District 6 may be found on the Board’s webpage at https://www.hartnell.edu/about/hccdgb/trustee_area_6_map.pdf.

The Board is responsible for the performance of Hartnell College, which serves over 9,000 students per semester and provides vital educational services to all the communities in the region.

The Board is seeking candidates who have the ability and time to fulfill the responsibilities of being a member of the Board, which include:

  • Participating fully in the work of the Board, including attending all meetings and some college events, studying issues and agenda items, and participating in trustee education programs.
  • Being knowledgeable about the communities served by the College and willing to act on behalf of and for the benefit of those communities.
  • Being committed to community colleges, their missions, and their students’ learning, understanding educational, social, and economic policy issues.
  • Engaging in balancing the needs of the many diverse groups, being able to contribute to and build consensus.
  • Participating as one member of a board and supporting the authority of the board as a whole.

The Board typically meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m.

Tuesday, November 14, 2023, 4 p.m.

Application materials will be considered by members of the Board in determining who will be invited to an interview on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. The interview will be conducted in person and at a public board meeting.  Further information will be provided to those candidates about the board meeting and interview process.  Candidates invited to an interview will be asked questions by members of the Board related to the role of a trustee.
