Hartnell College presents a free concert with the band Troker

SALINAS, Calif. – The Hartnell Community College District in collaboration with the Monterey Jazz Festival will present the eclectic music of the band Troker at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Mainstage in building K at 411 Central Avenue, Salinas, California.  This is a free event for the community at large and is a kickoff to the Monterey Jazz Festival which starts on September 16.

“This is a great partnership that will bring a flare of musicality to our campus and to our community,” said Dr. Willard Lewallen, Superintendent/President.  “The Monterey Jazz Festival brings people together every year to engage in the love of music and we are overjoyed to be a part of this 59-year tradition.”

The band Troker, from Guadalajara, Mexico, blends jazz, rock, and funk with psychedelic, hip hop, and even cumbia music. Over the last decade, Troker has performed across Mexico, Latin America, the United States, and Europe, including the Glastonbury Festival in England. Their concerts are, in the words of All About Jazz, “noisy, chaotic, sprawling, messy, and altogether wonderful.”

“The Monterey Jazz Festival is pleased to open our 59th annual gathering with a free performance at Hartnell College by one of our featured bands,” said Colleen Bailey, Executive Director of the Monterey Jazz Festival. “Troker is expanding the notion of what it means to be a jazz fan and I expect attendees to the performance will be surprised and delighted by their unique combination of music styles.”

The six-piece group has created an exciting high-energy blend of composed and improvised music, which includes powerhouse funk drumming and DJ scratching, with horn lines pulled from jazz and the mariachi tradition of the band’s homeland. In addition to touring, Troker also performs outreach concerts for kids and hosts workshops in marginalized areas of big cities. Troker has released three albums; for a taste of their music, go to http://en.troker.com.mx

Tickets are free and are available on a first-come, first-served basis at Hartnell College’s Box Office in building K or in the Office of Student Life in C-140.
