SALINAS, Calif. – In a collaboration with the Santa Cruz County Immigration Project, Hartnell College will hold a free Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and AB60 legal clinic on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Steinbeck Hall in building ‘C’ at 411 Central Avenue, Salinas.
The legal aid and information sessions will be from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. More than six immigration lawyers and 10 of their assistants are confirmed to be present to answer questions and help with paperwork about DACA and AB60. Students in the Transfer Through Teamwork (TTT) and Association of Leaders to Succeed (ALAS) clubs will also be present to assist.
Through AB60, undocumented immigrants who qualify will obtain their driver’s license. This workshop will answer any questions or concerns, show prospects how to apply, and will allow for a practice driver’s exam.
In addition, this workshop will help individuals who need to renew their DACA status or wish to apply for the first time.
“Hartnell College is co-sponsoring this event as a follow-up to the legal clinic offered in fall 2012 when DACA was first introduced,” said VP of Student Affairs, Dr. Romero Jalomo. “We look forward to a good turnout from our local community.”
DACA allows immigrants brought to the United States without documentation as children to stay without fear of deportation and apply for work permits if they meet certain criteria. DACA status is good for two years and the first round of DACA renewals have begun this fall.
You may be eligible for DACA if you:
- came to the US under the age of 16
- were born after June 15, 1981
- lived in the US continuously from June 15, 2007 to the present
- are in school, GED program or Adult school, or high school or GED graduate
- have no serious criminal record or gang affiliation
What do I need to apply for DACA?
- Proof of identity (birth certificate, passport, matrícula consular, other official photo ID)
- Proof of arrival to U.S. before age 16 and proof of residence from June 15, 2007 to present (school records, medical records, I-94 or visa, bank accounts, bills, paystubs, church records)
- Proof you were in the U.S. on June 15, 2012 (school records, receipts or paystubs, or letter from employer)
- Proof of education (current transcript, diploma, GED certificate)
- Check or money order for $465 payable to “USCIS” – not needed on Saturday
Rosemary Fan, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, will have staff present to assist community members with the paperwork. The offices of Assembly member Luis Alejo, Senator Bill Monning, and Congressman Sam Farr have been invited to this event.
