Duo 2-Step Verification - Instructions

How to Get Started

Note: These steps must be completed on a laptop or desktop computer.

Enroll your Device


  1. To begin your Duo enrollment, click "Enroll your Device" to select the Duo Multifactor Authentication option, and log in.
  2. Your browser will now show the Duo Enrollment screen. Click Start setup.
  3. You are prompted to select the type of device you are adding. Select Mobile phone, and then click Continue.
  4. Enter your mobile phone number in the space provided. (Note: If you are using an international phone number, you can select your country from the drop down menu.)
  5. After entering the phone number, a second field displays for you to confirm the number. Check that the number is correct, select the checkbox, and then click Continue
  6. Enter the type of mobile phone you are enrolling, and then click Continue. (NOTE: Smartphone users should select iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone.)

Registering a second device such as a landline or office/home phone gives you a backup method of authenticating with Duo when your primary method is not available.

For any issues involving Duo two-step authentication, including forgetting your phone or setting up a new device, you will need to contact the IT Help Desk directly at 831-755-6789.

  1. Go to the App Store or Play Store on your smartphone.
  2. Search for Duo Mobile.
  3. Install the app on your smartphone. There is no fee to install the app.

NOTE: You will need your App Store or Play Store password to complete installation

  1. After completing the installation of the app on the smartphone, on your computer, click I have Duo Mobile installed.
  2. The Activate Duo Mobile screen displays. With the Activate Duo Mobile screen displaying on the computer, open the Duo Mobile app on the smartphone.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) in the upper right corner of the phone screen.
  4. From the Duo Mobile app, scan the barcode that displays in the Activate Duo Mobile computer screen.
  5. A green checkmark displays on the computer screen.  Click Continue.  You are done with enrollment and can skip to Part 5 below. 

  1. After completing the installation of the app on the smartphone, on your computer, click I have Duo Mobile installed.
  2. The Activate Duo Mobile screen displays. Click on the Email me an activation link instead link.
  3. Enter an email address you access to on your smartphone and press Send email
  4. On your smartphone, open your email.  You should receive an email from "Duo Security <no-reply@duosecurity.com>" with a link to a web site.  Click this link open a web site with the activation link.  On the web site, click the Activate Duo Mobile link to activate the Duo mobile application.
  5. You have now enrolled the Duo mobile app. Click Continue.
  6. Press Finish Enrollment to complete the enrollment of your Smartphone.

 

  1. The Enrollment Successful screen displays. Click Dismiss.
  2. Verify that your phone number is correct, and select an authentication option for When I log in. The recommended setting is Automatically send this device a Duo Push.
  3. Click Save, then click Finish Enrollment.

Once you have enrolled in Duo, each time you go to a Duo protected resource you will be prompted to enter your Duo credentials.

  1. From your computer or laptop, go to a Duo Protect Resource such as Hartnell Gmail
  2. Log in with your Hartnell ID and password
  3. Once you have entered your Hartnell credentials, you will see the Duo Prompt
  4. Click on the Send Me a Push button
  5. Your secondary device (in most cases your phone) will receive a Push Notification.
  6. Open the Duo Mobile App from your device and Accept the notification to complete the authentication process.
  7. Once you have approved the login request, you will automatically be redirected to the Hartnell-protected resource you are attempting to access.
