The Fourth Hartnell College Genomics Group manuscript, led by Hartnell biology instructor Dr. Jeffery Hughey, was published Jan. 8 in the scientific journal Mitochondrial DNA Part B: Resources. The research was performed and the paper written by the General Botany class.
The peer-reviewed article titled "The complete mitochondrial genome of the kelp fly Fucellia costalis (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) from Pacific Grove, California," is the first study to describe the mitochondrial genome from this common beach fly from the Central Coast. The project was funded by the NSF Applied Learning Experiences (ALE) grant.
