Hartnell hosted about 100 Migrant Education Program students from our district high schools for a full day of experiences during Migrant Ed Youth Day on Feb. 13.

The event was organized by Brenda Jones, college pathways coordinator, and involved the nursing program, Mi CASA, MESA, TRiO, Upward Bound and the Transfer and Career Center.

The Migrant Education Program, administered by the Monterey County Office of Education, serves children of agricultural workers in Monterey County, including some whose frequent moves may pose a challenge to their academic success.

“An event like Migrant Youth Day at Hartnell College helps create an awareness of the educational opportunities that exist for our students,” said Jorge Morales, educational liaison for Migrant Ed. “The visit makes the option of enrolling at Hartnell College a very real option for our students.”

Carla Johnson, dean of student success, welcomed the students, and Manuel Bersamin, director of TRiO/Student Support Services, was the guest speaker. Nursing and Allied Health students Erika Turcotte, Kelly Quiroz, Zuryna Quintero and Alfredo Alvarez provided hands-on training in chest compression. Many other staff members participated as well.

After the program on the Main Campus, the students toured the Alisal Campus and watched presentations on automotive and agricultural technology, welding and fabrication, led by Alejandra Carrillo, Isaura Arreguin and Maria Jerezano.
