After a three-game home sweep against Redwoods on Feb. 1-2, Hartnell Baseball is 4-2 on the season, with three more home games this week. The Panthers opened the Redwood series by winning a double-header, 5-4 and 3-1, then took game three, 16-4, on Feb. 2. They lost at West Valley on Jan. 29, 8-11.
The Panthers won the second game on brilliant pitching by sophomore Tommy Castro (Gilroy H.S.), who struck out eight Redwoods batters through seven strong innings. Castro (pictured) is now second in the entire state for total strikeouts, at 17. Bueno continued his surge at the plate, going 1-2 with an RBI and playing a solid shortstop.
Hartnell Softball opened its season Jan. 26 with a double-header on the road at Reedley, coming up short in both games, 0-8 and 1-11. They have a five-game home stand, beginning Feb. 8.
In basketball action, the men’s team (10-13) split two home games last week – beating De Anza, 89-74, on Jan. 30 and falling to Gavilan, 48-63, on Feb. 1. The women (3-16) lost to the same opponents – 52-47 against De Anza and 58-64 against Gavilan. Both teams are down to their final four games of the season, including Feb. 20 matchups against Monterey Peninsula.
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field will begin their seasons on Feb. 16 at the Monterey Peninsula College Open before hosting the Gary Shaw Mini Multi/10k Qualifier on Feb. 18.
