The Hartnell men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their 2019 seasons with strong showings at the Monterey Peninsula College Open on Feb. 16 before competing in a home meet, the Gary Shaw Mini Multi/10k Qualifier, on Feb. 18-19.

Coach Christopher Zepeda is enthusiastic about his athletes, including freshman De’Antae Williams (Seaside H.S.), who placed second in the 100-meter sprint at MPC with a time of 10.88. On the women’s team, freshman Isabelle Torres (Salinas H.S.) took second in the 3,000-meter run, at 11:15.75. The teams will next travel to the Diablo Valley College Invitational in Pleasant Hill on Feb. 22.

Panther Baseball, 6-4-1 as of Feb. 18, will see its next home action against Gavilan on March 7. Pitcher Tommy Castro was named Norcal Pitcher of the Week by the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association for his nine-strikeout win over American River, 3-0, on Feb. 9.

Hartnell Softball fell to Cuesta Tournament in both games of a Feb. 12 home-field doubleheader. The Panthers have four more home doubleheaders coming up through March 1, against Taft, Foothill, West Hills Coalinga and Porterville, plus a single game against Cabrillo on Feb. 28. Their record stands at 0-4.

After a close 71-77 loss to West Valley at home on Feb. 13, Men’s Basketball (11-15) is looking to a Feb. 20 home game against cross-county rival MPC on Feb. 20. They will end their season at De Anza on Feb. 22. The women’s team (3-18) will also play MPC at home on Feb. 20 and conclude its season at De Anza on Feb. 22.
