  • SALINAS, Calif. – Hartnell College and the Communication Studies Department present the Academic Expo starting next week in Steinbeck Hall at 411 Central Avenue, Salinas, CA.

This semester’s judging panel will include the 2014-2015 Educator-in-Residence, Dr. Anne Benvenuti.  Over 60 projects will be judged to receive awards in a public ceremony on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 2:30 p.m.

Students enrolled in Introduction to Public Speaking (COM 1), Introduction to Communication (COM 3), and Argumentation and Debate (COM 20) were divided into working groups of 3 to 5 to work on this final project requirement for the spring 2015 semester.

“These group projects demand the top three skills employers are demanding,” said Professor Jason Hough. “Students work in a group, use their oral skills, and written communication.”

Students will apply communication principles and analyze: historical speeches for COM 1, recent films for COM 3, and current events in COM 20, plus each group creates an original table display and backdrop to present analysis findings open to the general public on:

    Thursday, May 21 * 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

    Friday, May 22 * 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

    Tuesday, May 26 * 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

    Wednesday, May 27 * 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

The Academic Expo will feature students from Communication Studies instructors Marnie Glazier, Jason Hough, and Sara Parker. Each instructor will select a Best of Class from each section, and of these, a Best of Show will be selected by a panel of judges.

Hough created the Academic Expo model to introduce students to the basics of research and effective group decision making. The Expo has become a mainstay of the Communication Studies discipline on campus.  For more, contact Professor Hough at jhough@hartnell.edu.
