CTE outcomes report
Higher education brings satisfaction and higher salaries
SALINAS, Calif. – Hartnell Community College District is proud to announce the results
of a survey conducted by the RP Group that indicate the high value of Career Technical
Education (CTE) in advancing our students and community.
At the Governing Board meeting on January 10, 2017, Superintendent/President, Dr.
Willard Lewallen presented the results that show a significant increase of job placement
from part-time to full-time, and a 49.8% increase in hourly wages after studies.
A total of 835 CTE students from 2013-14 academic year were surveyed, including those
who completed a certificate, a degree, or took 9 or more CTE units. We had 160 respond
to the survey. Most answered that the primary reason for studying was to earn a certificate/degree
and transfer, or to just earn a certificate. Over 90% were satisfied with the education
and training they received at Hartnell College and found employment after completing
their studies.
The results of the survey show that completing CTE studies and training – whether
or not a credential is earned, whether or not a student transfers – is related to
positive employment outcomes. These outcomes are even stronger at Hartnell College
when compared to the statewide survey.
The preponderance of respondents are employed, are working in the same field as their
studies or training, and are working full time. The full presentation and full survey results are attached.
In an effort to provide information on employment outcomes for students who have participated
in career technical education (CTE) programs at California community colleges—including
whether students became employed within their field of study, if their community college
coursework positively affected their earning potential, and why students dropped out
of CTE programs—the RP Group partnered with the Bay Area Community College Consortium
(BACCC) and practitioners from around the state to develop a universally available
survey methodology. Hartnell College is a member of the Bay Area Community College
Consortium.
This survey is based on completer and leaver surveys that have been conducted at
several colleges and was tested through a pilot study in 2011-12 with twelve colleges,
two districts, and one program of study (Medical Assisting) at seven different institutions
in the Bay Region.
The CTE Outcomes Survey has grown to include 68 colleges participating in 2015-2016.
Results are being posted on the CTE Launchboard (a collaborative effort between Cal-PASS+
and the Chancellor's Office Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy). And, results have been shared at annual meetings of the California Community College
Association for Occupational Education (CCCAOE), the Research & Planning Group of
California Community Colleges (RP Group), the California Association of Institutional
Researchers (CAIR), the national Association of Institutional Researchers (AIR), the
National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE), and the Strengthening Student Success
conference.
