SALINAS, Calif. – Hartnell College Superintendent/President Dr. Willard Lewallen urges interested community members in Salinas and surrounding communities and beyond to attend a public forum on Measure T projects at 6 p.m. on Sept. 19 in Building E, room 112, on the Main Campus in Salinas.
The Hartnell Facilities Planning and Construction Management Department will hold a similar forum on Sept. 26 at the Soledad High School Community Room. The first of three forums was held Sept. 12 at the King City Education Center.
The Sept. 19 forum in Salinas will cover plans for a new Nursing and Health Sciences Building, renovations to Buildings D and E, as well as the upcoming expansion of the King City center and construction of a new Outreach Center in Soledad.
Lewallen will provide background and updates and then introduce project architects, who will present their latest designs. Following the presentation, members of the public will have a chance to ask questions and receive answers from the presenters.
Voters in the Hartnell Community College District approved Measure T, a $167 million local bond measure, in November 2016. Their support is allowing Hartnell to upgrade and expand classrooms, labs and facilities on the Main Campus in Salinas, at the Alisal Campus in East Salinas and in both south and north Monterey County.
By improving access to higher education, Hartnell can help the people of the Salinas Valley earn associate degrees, certificates, and four-year degrees to obtain better paying jobs. At present, only 60 percent of Salinas Valley residents over the age of 25 have earned a high school diploma, and only 5-7 percent of the district’s Latino population has attained a four-year degree or higher.
