SALINAS, Calif. – Hartnell Community College District is happy to host the Sixth Annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference and Career Fair for young women tomorrow, November 21, 2015 starting at 8:00 a.m. at 411 Central Avenue, Salinas, CA.

This unique collaboration with the Lyceum of Monterey County, brings together girls in grades 5-10 interested in math, technology, science, and engineering (STEM). More than 300 girls, parents and teachers will be in attendance.

The workshops and career fair will be at the Student Center and adjacent rooms from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Career Fair will run throughout the day providing the youth valuable insight and knowledge of different fields of study.  Workshops will also be offered to parents and teachers.

The participants will attend two hands-on workshops that will give them ample opportunity to interact with the professionals and work closely with their peers.  The opening session will be at 9:00 a.m. with Keynote Speaker Shalina Taylor, Ph.D., Stanford University Medical Researcher. She overcame many challenges to succeed in her career.  

Workshops will include: Light in the Deep Sea, Strawberry CSI, Why is Ketchup So Hard to Pour?, The Art of Science, Nature Illustration, Building Mountains and Oceans - Plate Tectonics, How Astronomers Use Light to Study Astrophysical Objects, Exploring the World of Dental Health, Kelp Forest Challenge, All About the Planets, Ocean Currents, Corals on Acid, The Pulse of Elkhorn Slough, Turning Pennies into Malachite, Exploring Plankton, Water for Food - Yesterday's Witches are Today's Wizards.
