SALINAS, Calif. – This month, Hartnell Community College District proudly initiated the  Hartnell’s Men's Institute for Leadership and Education (MILE) Program. MILE gathered 25 male students to participate in an intensive leadership training.  Each of the scholars will receive a $1000 scholarship upon successful completion of program in spring 2017.

After completion of the leadership training, students will be paired with male mentors and leaders from the community for quarterly activities. MILE Scholars will also receive intensive academic counseling and support. (More information/timeline in attached flyer)

MILE is part of a greater initiative to provide programs and services for men of color at Hartnell College. Following a competitive application process, 25 male scholars were selected to participate in the year-long program. MILE is modeled after the successful Women's Education and Leadership Institute (WELI) but is specifically designed to increase male student equity and success through self-efficacy coaching and mentoring.

The facilitator for the leadership sessions was Dr. Frederick Moore, a faculty member at City College of San Francisco and visiting professor at UC Berkeley. He is an active collaborator in the Salinas Valley Health Professions Pathway. His research involves assisting underrepresented students in realizing and meeting their full potential academically and personally.

Although male enrollment exceeds female enrollment at Hartnell College, men are not graduating at the same rate as women. In addition, Salinas currently has the highest per capita homicide rate for young men aged 10 to 24 in the state of California. The overarching goal of the MILE program is to address the underlying issues which affect male students and assist them in achieving their educational goals.

The MILE program is generously supported by the Hartnell College Foundation, The California Endowment, Associated Students of Hartnell College, and Student Success; it is directed by the Hartnell College Student Affairs Office of Special Programs.

The MILE Graduation will be on  Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.  in Steinbeck Hall.
