Hartnell faculty member has book published

Salinas, Calif. – Hartnell Community College District is proud to announce the publishing of sociology faculty member Dr. Hortencia Jimenez‘s book Challenging Inequalities: Readings in Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration.

“We are proud of the work faculty members are doing each day to impact the lives of thousands of students in our communities – Dr. Jimenez goes even further and brings us a book to be used as a resource for our students to learn to cope with internal and external challenges they might face in race, ethnicity, and immigration,” said Superintendent/President, Dr. Willard Lewallen. “The work of Dr. Jimenez is courageous and provides an opportunity for all of us to examine difficult and complex issues.”

Challenging Inequalities  offers a fresh perspective on current research by examining the histories and historiographies of racism on both the micro (individual) and macro (institutional) levels. The book highlights the ways in which race is and has long been structured in social institutions, as well as the various ways in which institutional systems maintain and perpetuate such social inequalities.

“I envisioned a book that reflected the collaborative effort of established scholars in academia and emerging scholars representing diverse disciplines and university affiliations and community college,” exclaimed Dr. Jimenez. “Equally important for this project was to include talented artists and scholars from our community here in Monterey County. I also wanted to provide my students like Eduardo Velasquez and Celeste Torres the opportunity to publish their poetry.”

This is work that has taken Dr. Hortencia two years to write, but the ideas within, come from her own teachings over the years.   She was inspired to write the book due to the absence of an undergraduate course textbook that placed racialization and structural racism at the center of discussions of immigration and race.

“The readings contained herein exhibit the ways in which race has shaped the experiences of ethnic and racial groups in the U.S from the nation’s founding to the present,” she added.

Challenging Inequalities  is published by Cognella Academic Publishing and can be found at
