SALINAS, Calif. – The Hartnell Speech Team is hard at work and making a name for itself at every tournament they attend.  On Saturday, February 7, 2015 the team visited Chabot College in Hayward, California to participate in the Keeling Invitational Speech Tournament.

The Speech Team competed against 13 other two-year and four-year schools, including Mt. Hood Community College (Oregon), CSU Chico, San Jose State University, and UC Berkeley.  The team members representing Hartnell brought home a number of prizes:

·         Victoria Garcia- 2nd place - Open Communication Analysis

·         Andrea Cervantes, 3rd place - Open Communication Analysis

·         Adrian Flores, 3rd place - Open Dramatic Interpretation

·         Lourdes Tinajero and Christopher Rendon, 3rd place - Open Dramatic Duo Interpretation

·         Sarina Atkins, 3rd place - Novice Informative Speaking

·         Meritzy Ayala, 5th place - Open Informative Speaking

“This has been a great year of growth for the team,” said Coach Jason Hough. “Our goal was for all team members receive an award during the season. 10 of the 11 members have accomplished just that!”

The week prior, the Speech Team drove up to Livermore, California to compete at the TalkHawk Invitational Speech Tournament held at Las Positas College on January 31, 2015.   Those earning awards were:

·         Sarina Atkins- Top Novice - Informative Speaking

·         Andrea Cervantes- 3rd place - Open Communication Analysis

·         Victoria Garcia- 4th place - Open Communication Analysis

·         Lourdes Tinajero- 5th place - Open Prose Interpretation

·         Meritzy Ayala- 5th place - Open Informative Speaking

·         Marc Dover- 5th place - Novice Persuasive Speaking

Also competing for the team were Jaime Guzman, Joy Jubane and Tanaya Landry.  The team is preparing for the California Community College State Championships, March 12-15, 2015 in Woodland Hills, California.
