Hartnell College welcomes Vocal Artist Melanie DeMore

SALINAS, Calif. – The Hartnell Community College District welcomes vocal artist and activist Melanie DeMore for a musical concert on International Women’s Day at Hartnell College, 411 Central Ave., Salinas, on Thursday, March 8, 2018, for two unique performances:

  • Singing and Stick Pounding Workshop at  1:00 p.m.  - Studio Theater (K-116)
  • Community Sing at  7:00 p.m.  - Mainstage (K-104)

These special engagement opportunities are free for students, staff, and the community at large.  DeMore comes to Hartnell thanks to co-sponsorship from the Associated Students of Hartnell College and the Hartnell College EEO/Diversity Committee.  This event will educate and delight participants.

“I was at Melanie DeMore’s performance at Hartnell last year,” shared Hartnell’s Associate VP of Human Resources, Terri Pyer. “I was moved by her uniquely beautiful and powerful voice, and the way she got the audience to connect with the sounds, movements, and traditions embodied in her music.  She creates a wholly spiritual experience that will make you want to smile at strangers!”

Singer-songwriter Melanie DeMore has a remarkable voice, weaving the fibers of African American folk music with soulful ballads, spirituals and her own original music. She beautifully brings her audience together through her music and commentary. She has toured extensively, singing at festivals, universities, in coffee houses, and concert halls.

In addition to her solo work, DeMore facilitates vocal workshops for professional and community-based choral groups and has taught her program called “Sound Awareness” in schools, prisons, and youth organizations in the US, Canada, Cuba and New Zealand.
