SALINAS, Calif. – In a collaboration with the  Lyceum of Monterey County,  Hartnell College is hosting the Fifth Annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference and Career Fair on Saturday, November 22, 2014 for girls in grades 5-11 interested in math, technology, science, and engineering (STEM). More than 300 girls, parents and teachers will be in attendance.

The workshops and career fair will be at 411 Central Avenue, Salinas, CA at the Student Center and adjacent rooms from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Career Fair will run throughout the day where the youth can gain insight and knowledge of different fields of study. 

The girls will attend two hands-on workshops that will give them ample opportunity to interact with the professionals and work closely with their peers.  Special speakers will include:

·         Keynote, Anne Gibbon, Design Principal at BMNT Partners - “Building Your Own Career Ladder.”  (9:00 AM)

·         Bob Cole and Sean Raymond, Monterey Institute of International Studies and York School - “Design Studio Problem Solving Model. (10:00 -11:15 AM)

·         Bronwyn Moreno, Hartnell MESA Director and MESA Student Panel - “College Life Workshop” and tour of Hartnell College Campus (1:30 -2:15 PM)

Workshops will include Marine Invertebrate Dissection; Plastics: Reduce, Use, or Recycle; Underwater Robotics; Water Density/Oceanography, and others.  During the workshops the participants will do a number of stimulating activities such as extracting DNA from multiple sources with common household items, plus build, hypothesize, and test robotics.  Some will get to use the latest technologies from the Monterey Bay Aquarium to peek into the largest, most mysterious habitat on earth.
