Stellar Navigators of Sea and Space visit Hartnell
SALINAS, Calif. – On Thursday, May 18, 2017 , the Hartnell College Planetarium will host two lectures by experts on navigating by the stars at 12:30 p.m. in STEM Center at 411 Central Avenue, Salinas, CA.
The lectures will be given by Bruce Rowe , a local experienced in marine navigation of commercial ships, and Coralie Jackman , a member of NASA’s New Horizons team that successfully piloted the first probe past Pluto.
This is one of a growing series of events hosted in the new planetarium aimed at expanding its role on campus and in the local community with support from the Hartnell College Foundation.
The lectures are a part of a larger event centered on strengthening ties between Hartnell and local institutions. Along with the lectures at Hartnell, there will be a technical talk on astronavigation for students at the Naval Post-Graduate School and a workshop on practical celestial navigation for sailors at the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club.
The visit will kick off late morning, with a lunch hosted by the Women's Education & Leadership institute (WELI) at Hartnell. WELI scholars will share thoughts and a meal with Coralie Jackman who is on the cutting edge of astronomy and aerospace technology.
At 12:30 p.m. , the Planetarium will host local 5th and 6 th grade students from Hartnell’s K-12 STEM Program who will join us for the two lectures. Seating is limited; the lectures are open to students and locals free of charge.
