Trustees vote to support undocumented students

and affirm the privacy of student records

SALINAS, Calif. –  At its regular meeting on February 7, 2017 the Governing Board of the Hartnell Community College District (HCCD) adopted Resolution 17:3, In Support of Undocumented Students and Affirming the Privacy of Student Records . This resolution affirms the values of Hartnell College in supporting undocumented students and also affirms that the District will protect the privacy of education records for all students regardless of immigration status and consistent with existing laws.

“The Board of Trustees unanimously adopted a resolution to support a safe place for undocumented students, and the District will take every means possible to protect the privacy rights of all its students,” shared President of the HCCD Board of Trustees, Manuel M. Osorio.   “It is our intent to ensure that the delivery of education provided by Hartnell College is not compromised in any way. The Board will do whatever is necessary to remain unwavering in our commitment to the people of our local community.”

Hartnell enrolled 779 “Dreamer” students in 2015-16 academic year. This represents a 168% increase over 5 years. What this data represents is that Hartnell is a welcoming and inclusive place where students enroll because they feel safe and know that Hartnell employees are focused on their success.

"Consistent with its values, Hartnell College is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity that has led to impressive achievements and outcomes for our students,” said Superintendent/President, Dr. Willard Lewallen. “We will protect the privacy of education records of all students; we will not be deterred from our relentless pursuit of success for them."

In collaboration with college and community partners, HCCD opened its doors to Mi CASA in April 2016, a center to support AB 540/DACA/undocumented (Dreamer) students in achieving their educational and personal goals through direct services, advocacy, and opportunities for student leadership and engagement. .
