SALINAS, Calif. - Hartnell Community College District and its Ag Business and Technology Institute are gearing up for the ninth Western Food Safety Summit with the theme Responsible Leadership in Food Safety on May 8 & 9, 2014 from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 411 Central Avenue, Salinas, CA. The Summit will be at the Main Stage in Building K.
This year's summit theme will focus on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) expected to be implemented in 2015. The summit will cover key topics relevant to food safety practices including training requirements for FSMA, risk analysis program, FDA investigations, legal consequences, treatment and irrigation water, foodborne investigation, organic standards, among other topics.
"This two-day event is an important venue for bringing the most current information and research to the Salinas Valley agriculture community and Hartnell students regarding the Food Safety Modernization Act, responsible leadership in food safety, and managing risks," said Dr. Susan M. Pheasant, Director of Agriculture Business & Technology Institute.
Attendees will have a unique opportunity to interact with speakers on the research poster session presenting relevant research related to agriculture and food safety with representatives from: University of Arizona, Monterey County Health Department, University of California, and University of Florida.
The summit ends with a panel discussion where attendees can address questions to ensure that our local agricultural industry is ready to comply with the new regulations. The program will be presented by local agricultural experts, public entities, universities, and other guest speakers.
