PDC Course Descriptions

Below is a listing of all of the current PDC courses and workshops. Not all workshops are offered each semester! To see the courses currently offered, return to the registration page.

Online Courses

PDC 100: Canvas Quick-Start (not eligible for flex credit)
Want a checklist for completing basic tasks in Canvas? Register for the online Canvas Quick-Start course! This course is not interactive or facilitated and is not eligible for flex credit, but it will take you through the basics very quickly.

PDC 101: Introduction to Canvas (12 flex credits)
Get an overview of the Canvas user interface and a quick introduction to some of its capabilities! Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a certificate of completion and 12 hours of flex credit. Note: This course is being phased out and will be replaced by Online Teaching 100: Foundations for Success.

Online Teaching 100: Foundations for Success (PDO100: 12 flex credits)
Get a course template aligned with online teaching best practices and learn the basic capabilities of the Canvas Learning Management System with the Canvas Orientation portion of this course! You'll also learn strategies for engaging in regular and effective contact with your students, and learn how to identify and remediate basic accessibility issues. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a certificate of completion and 12 hours of flex credit (if eligible). Expect to spend approximately 3 hours per week on coursework. Live instruction will be delivered through ConferZoom, but if you can't make it, lessons will be recorded and posted in the course.

Online Teaching 101: Introduction to Teaching Online (PDO101: 12 flex credits)
Get pedagogical training to help prepare you to teach online in this self-paced, fully online course! You'll learn how to plan and build your own online course, establish an online presence, build community and incorporate interactive multimedia components into your course. Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate of completion and 12 hours of flex credit.

Online Teaching 102: Virtual Classroom Skills  (PDO102: 1 flex credit per module completed, 6 modules)
This course is designed to help you learn additional technical skills that you can use in the online classroom. Take the entire self-paced course with all modules, or select whichever modules apply to you. Each module takes at least 1 hour to complete, and is eligible for 1 hour of flex credit. Module topics include: Starting a New Semester, Screen & Lecture Capture tools, Establish & Maintain Regular & Substantive Contact in Online Courses, Online Rosters: Take Attendance in Canvas & Drop Students in PAWS, Canvas Clean Up: Get New Courses Ready, and Accessibility & Canvas.

PDT 101: Introduction to Tech Tools (1 flex credit per module completed, 8 modules)
This course is designed to help you learn additional technical skills that you can use to improve your workflow on a daily basis. Take the entire self-paced course with all modules, or select whichever modules apply to you. Each module takes at least 1 hour to complete, and is eligible for 1 hour of flex credit. Module topics include: Adobe tools (creating forms and building portfolios), Photo editing with Pixlr, Creating Presentations with Prezi, Creating Animated Videos with Powtoon, Webconferencing with ConferZoom, Accessing Prof. Dev. Resources with the Vision Resource Center, Using Google Drive & Shared Drives, Screen Capture with Screencast-o-Matic.

*COMING SOON* PDT 102: Accessible Documents (1 flex credit per module completed, 4 modules)
This course is designed to help you create accessible documents, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe PDFs. Take the entire self-paced course with all modules, or select whicever modules apply to you. Each module takes at least 1 hour to complete, and is eligible for 1 hour of flex credit. Modules are organized by document type.

PDW 102: Create Webpages with Omni CMS (2 flex credits)
Learn how to create and edit webpages using Omni CMS software. Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate of completion and 2 hours of flex credit.

Adobe Sign: In this training for staff and administrators with Adobe Sign accounts, learn how to create and send documents for e-signatures using Adobe Sign. View the support materials for related guides, tutorial videos, and more.

ConferZoom Training: Learn how to create and host ConferZoom meetings for remote lectures, department meetings, virtual office hours, and more. View the support materials for related guides, tutorial videos, and more.

Google Drive & Jamboard Training: Learn the basics of working with Google Drive, Team Drive, Docs, Slides, and Jamboard, a new interactive whiteboard-style collaborative document. View the support materials for related guides, tutorial videos, and more.

Lecture Capture & Screen Recording: Learn about different options for hosting live lectures, office hours, and recording your screen! You will be introduced to the basic capabilities of multiple software options for live lecture hosting, screen recording, and office hours. You'll also gain access to further training resources that you can complete at your own pace. Software overviews include: Cranium Cafe, Google Meet, Canvas Studio, Screencast-o-Matic, and ConferZoom. Screencast-o-Matic: Use Screencast-o-Matic to pre-record lectures or other tutorials and post in your Canvas course or on the Hartnell website. View the support materials for related guides, tutorial videos, and more.

Creating Hartnell Webpages with Omni CMS: Learn how to create and edit Hartnell webpages like a pro! View the support materials for related guides, tutorial videos, and more. 

Canvas Basics: Get an overview of the Canvas user interface and a quick introduction to some of its capabilities! This session will include how to copy over content from last semester and is appropriate for preparing for the new semester. View the support materials for related guides, tutorial videos, and more.

Canvas Studio: Learn about the NEW Canvas Studio feature, which will allow you to record your lectures, your screen, your face, and caption those items all in ONE convenient place! View the support materials for related guides, tutorial videos, and more.

Canvas Quizzes: Learn how to create quizzes, leverage quiz options to minimize cheating, and use question banks. View the support materials for related guides, tutorial videos, and more.
