Beginning Fall 2025, Hartnell College will transition to the statewide Common Course Numbering (CCN) system, a California Community Colleges initiative that intends to make transferring to four-year institutions easier and more transparent.

CCN standardizes course numbers, titles, and descriptions for approximately 75–80 of the most commonly transferred courses statewide, helping students quickly identify courses that meet transfer requirements.

Hartnell College will implement CCN over a four-phase rollout:

  • Phase I (Fall 2025)
  • Phase IIA (Fall 2026)
  • Phase IIB (Fall 2027)
  • Phase III (TBA)

New CCN-aligned course numbers and titles will be introduced gradually in each phase. All updates will appear in the college catalog, class schedule, and other official publications as they take effect.

CCN-impacted courses will follow a 4-letter discipline prefix plus a “C1000” numbering format, in alignment with statewide standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

The California Community College system is implementing a Common Course Numbering (CCN) update by July 1, 2027. This change, required by Education Code Sections 66725-66725.5 and Assembly Bill No. 1111 (Berman), will assign common course numbers to similar courses across all community colleges in California. The goal is to make transferring to four-year universities easier and reduce unnecessary credit accumulation. By improving how credits transfer, CCN will help students make informed course choices, build clearer academic plans, and access better transfer opportunities.

Over the next three years, many frequent transfer courses will change their numbers and titles. When you search for and register for classes, you may need to look under different subject abbreviations or course titles. Courses will follow a 4-letter prefix + “C1000” format to align with CCN.

For example, ENGLISH 101 will change to ENGL C1000 starting in Fall 2025.

When Will These Changes Happen and Which Courses Are Affected?

CCN updates will affect 75 to 80 courses over three phases:

  • Fall 2025 – Phase I: 7 courses
  • Fall 2026 – Phase II: Courses will be announced.
  • Fall 2027 – Phase III: Courses will be announced.

For now, courses not part of Phase 1 CCN updates will keep their original numbers and titles. However, some courses may align with CCN updates in the future.

Courses taken under the old course number or title before the change will be treated and assigned under the new course number and title requirement. You don't need to retake a course if you've completed it and received a passing grade.

Course articulation (how courses transfer) will continue at the college level for all CCN courses. We recommend you talk to a counselor and check PAWS to see how a course fits your academic plan.

Courses not part of CCN will still fulfill general education and major requirements for transfer from Hartnell College to four-year institutions.

Check the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office and the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges websites for more information about the Common Course Numbering update and implementation.
